Last Wednesday Josh spent the day at 30A Wine Storage, a climate-controlled wine storage facility getting ready to open its doors. The cargo was everything a place like that needs before the first bottle arrives: wine glasses, accessories, and the small equipment the building runs on. The owner worked the carts alongside him.
Stocking a new business is a different kind of delivery
A household delivery has one destination and one person deciding where things go. A commercial fit-out has neither. Everything the business ordered from a dozen vendors shows up in the same stretch of days, the boxes all look the same, and the building is brand new — which means the floors, the paint, and in this case a wall of custom wooden lockers have never had a scratch on them. The job is to keep it that way while a truckload of freight rolls through.
So nothing gets carried that can ride. Boxes go onto four-wheel carts at the door and stay on wheels until they are standing where they belong. The palletized freight moves on a pallet jack. Nothing gets dragged, stacked against a locker face, or leaned on fresh paint.
Glassware rides upright, and it rides light
Wine glasses ship in divided cartons, and the cartons lie about how sturdy they are. The dividers protect the glass from the glass beside it — they do nothing about weight from above. So glassware cartons never go on the bottom of a stack, never travel on their sides, and never share a cart with anything heavy enough to shift into them. It is slower. It is also why every box opened with everything inside it intact.
When the owner works the floor with you
The owner of the facility was on the carts with Josh the whole time, and that changed the pace of the day. Every "where does this go" got answered in the moment it came up, nothing sat in a staging pile waiting on a decision, and the sequencing — what opens first, what stores until the shelving goes in — came straight from the person who planned the building. We are owner-operated ourselves, so this is our favorite way to work. Two owners on a floor get more done than a crew and a phone number.

Whenever they want to be there. Placement decisions happen fastest when the owner is on the floor, and as an owner-operated company we are set up for exactly that — the people unloading your freight are the owners of the moving company, so decisions get made peer to peer in real time.
